Both/And Thinking

Rational thinking and logic operate under either/or logic, and when decisions are made solely from that perspective, they tend to create exclusion of key stakeholders, prioritizing one over other, and creating zero-sum solutions. Both-and thinking allows us to understand paradoxes and calls for creative solutions that are inclusive of all stakeholders. These types of solutions are key for the health of the ecosystem and create fair and peaceful societies.

Both/And thinking would ultimately replace the current Either/Or mindset. This method of thinking has huge potential as you go from exclusion to inclusive decisions, and move from dangerous choices to creative solutions.

Teaching Goal: Students recognize either/or solutions, understand the limitations, practice both-and thinking to accept paradoxes, and create inclusive solutions.

Meta Goal: Develop the habit of seeing the ‘either/or’ factor at play, and intentionally promote both-and thinking.
